Got a Burglar Alarm System? Worried About False Alarms? Learn How to Prevent Them

When you first install a burglar alarm system, it is not uncommon to be worried about false alarms. It is also not uncommon to set off a false alarm with your burglar alarm system while the system is new, but there are steps that you and your family can take to prevent them.

The first thing that you can do to prevent false alarms from your burglar alarm system is to make sure that you - and all of the other members of your family - know about the burglar alarm system and how it works. One simple element of this step is to make sure that everyone in the family knows how to arm and disarm the burglar alarm system.

Of course, it may not only be the members of your family who will need to know this. If you have babysitters or members of a cleaning service team, it is important for them to know about your burglar alarm system because they may be entering or leaving the home when you are not there.

Though you may have a high level of confidence in the individuals who take care of your children and your home, there are steps that you can take to ensure that they will only be disarming and arming the burglar alarm system when you are aware of their doing so. For example, you can provide them with an alternate burglar alarm system code and password; that way you will always be aware of who has last turned on or off your burglar alarm system.

Not all false alarms from a burglar alarm system are the result of not being turned on and off properly. Therefore it is important to consider other ways of preventing false alarms.

Keep in mind those members of your family who cannot be taught to turn your burglar alarm system on and off: your pets. You can prevent false alarms by making sure that the motions sensors of your burglar alarm systems do not pick up the motion of your pets as they wander from one room to the next.

Most burglar alarm systems will not detect smaller pets. Still, it is important to take your pets into consideration when you want to prevent false alarms from your burglar alarm system - especially if your pet tends to jump or climb. When the motion sensors for your burglar alarm system are placed, make sure that they will not go off if your dog jumps up onto the couch or your cat climbs up onto the dining room table or your kitchen counter while you are not home and the system is armed.

And it is not just your pets that could set off a false alarm from your burglar alarm system. Therefore, you will also want to check to make sure that ceiling fans do not cause excessive motion of your hanging plants. Or, if you are planning a birthday party, make sure that banners, streamers or balloons that you have purchased for the celebration will not be moving in front of the sensors as that too could cause a false alarm.

However, no matter how much prevention you do to keep your burglar alarm system from sending false alarms, there is always a possibility that one will occur. If it happens while you are at home, simply enter your code to disarm the system and be ready with the password when Guardian's representatives call to make sure that everything is alright.

And, of course, if you have any questions about your burglar alarm system, call and ask Guardian - the same representatives that will monitor your system and keep your home safe are there to offer help and answer any questions that you may have.
